To date MRE presentations have attended for more than 25000 individuals in Darfur region.
Furthermore, MRE teams have reported more than 35 suspected dangerous areas to MTI multi tasking teams for follow up.
Recently, Mines Awareness Trust (MAT) has been subcontracted by Mine Tech International (MTI) in Sudan to provide a Mine Risk Education (MRE) Coordinator and an MRE Trainer in order educate civillians on how to exit in mine contaminated areas.
The project is aimed at educating
Indigenous people (IDP’s) and following them back to their homes. Through this educational
project MAT is able to determine the likely suspected
areas in or around communities, by providing valuable information for
Landmine Impact Survey (LIS) and to assist Technical Survey (TS).
This program was designed as an emergency program to be put in place before the commencement of repatriation of IDPs in the Darfur region (known as one of most complex humanitarian emergency in Africa) where they are likely to encounter unexploded ordnance (UXO) contamination and abandoned ordnance.
In the harsh environment of Darfur, working with the population is challenging and the political situation makes it dangerous. The MRE teams, however, spend days with the communities working to educate communities of Darfur about UXO.
