THE MINES AWARENESS TRUST
The Sudan MDD

In the summer of 2008 MAT deployed a large Mine Detection Dog (MDD) Group into Southern Sudan.  This project is to support a commercial company conducting route clearance.

The MAT MDD's are following the route clearance machines and check the ground prepared for further landmines and UXO.After the dogs arrived in Juba on the 10th of September 2008, the hard work started. They dogs had to start with the acclimatization process and in- country training in preparation for the UN accreditation. This is a test any MDD must pass if it is to commence work as a MDD dog.

After a month of blood, sweat and tears from the dogs and their handlers, MAT staff were ready and all 8 dogs passed the accreditation first time around. Hats of to the team leader and the handlers, which did a great job. With accreditation behind us, teams were ready to deploy to thier work sites, located all over Southern Sudan.

Unfortunately due to heavy rains in the country, progress is slow, but the handlers are remaining focused and motivated and so are all the dogs.
