EOD L4 Course

Introduction:

 
·         The training goal of the course is to instruct students to the required knowledge, skills & attitude necessary to perform the duties & tasks during EOD Operations of a qualified IMAS Level 4 EOD Operator, in accordance with International Mine Action Standards (IMAS).

·         Levels of competency training meet IMAS 09.30, Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Level 4 criteria. Students will have the opportunity to gain an IMAS level 4 EOD qualification, depending on the level of competency displayed by the student during assessments and testing.

·         The students will be issued professionally produced reference materials for the course, included is an EOD training handbook, a set of International Mine Action Standards, Technical notes for Mine Action, Information Management System for Mine Action reports, relevant GICHD Books and publications and examples of actual reports/forms. To complement these handouts there is a large and varied selection of UXO training aids to help facilitate the learning process.

 

 

 

Aim:

To train individuals with the technical skills & knowledge required to be a qualified EOD Level 4 Operator, which will enable them to carry out the correct procedures & operations in support of mine action programmes in accordance with IMAS, where individuals will be able to demonstrate a complete understanding of the following illustrative topics:


Illustrative Topics:

The six-week syllabus includes:

 
1. IMAS & TNMA: Introduction to the framework of IMAS & TNMA’s, Navigation and extraction of info from the standards. Introduction to SOP accreditation procedures.

2. EXPLOSIVE THEORY: Classification of explosives, the effects and power of explosives, High and Low explosive trains, Velocity of detonation and figure of insensitivity of explosives, types of detonation. Explosive formed projectiles (shaped charge) design & effects, Low explosive propellant design and characteristics.

3. EOD TASK MANAGEMENT: The 10 phases of an EOD operation, Information gathering techniques, initial threat assessment and planning, the continual threat assessment and task progression process. Practical EOD task management training exercises.

4. LAND SERVICE AMMUNITION: The generic aids to identification, fuse types, fuse arming and functioning actions. Generic and detailed recognition of Projectiles, Mortars, Rockets, Grenades and Mines including white phosphorous and depleted uranium munitions. Generic methods of disposal and render safe procedure’s.

5. LANDMINES & BOOBY TRAPS: Components parts of a landmine, Landmine types & principles of operation. Simple and complicated firing mechanisms. Generic methods of disposal and render safe procedures. Introduction and principles of Booby traps, component parts and types of traps, methods of operation. Render safe procedures, practical Booby trap setting and clearance training exercises.

6. IMPROVISED EXPLOSIVE DEVICE DISPOSAL: Introduction and principles of IED’s, Types and component parts, methods of operation. IEDD safety precautions including safety distances. IED disruption equipment and techniques. Practical IEDD training exercises.

7. AIR DROPPED WEAPONS: Aircraft bombs key identifying features. Pistols and fuses, arming & functioning actions. Recognition by classification and role of aircraft bombs, Containers, incendiaries, Sub munitions & area denial weapons. Fuel air explosives and associated hazards, Generic methods of disposal and render safe procedures.

8. USE OF EXPLOSIVES: Generic types of explosives, demolition equipment and accessories, Types of initiation methods including destruction by burning. High and low order techniques including bulk demolition procedures. Practical live UXO disposal training at CDS.

9. MANAGEMENT OF OBOD OPERATION: Criteria for selection of disposal sites, disposal Site layout. Management and accreditation of a central demolition sites, Practical demolition site selection exercise. Demolition range SOP’s and compiling a demolition order and destruction programme.

10. STORAGE, TRANSPORTATION AND HANDLING OF EXPLOSIVES: Legislation and regulations for the storage and transportation of explosives. Hazardous materials signage for transportation of explosives and Audit of an Explosive Storage facility.

11. GUIDED WEAPONS: GW’s classification, components parts recognition & associated safety precautions. GW’s role & category detailed identification, reconnaissance procedures. GW’s disposal techniques, including liquid propellants and chemical precautions. Practical GW EOD task training.

12. EOD CHEMICAL PRECAUTIONS: Identification of chemical ordnance. P.P.E and emergency personal decontamination station. Types of Chemical Detection equipment, Implementation of downwind hazards and Chemical mitigation measures. Specific practical training for DU, Liquid propellant and fuel air hazards.

13. BATTLE AREA CLEARANCE: BAC reconnaissance, setting out procedures & clearance methods. Visual, shallow & deep instrument search techniques with practical demonstration & exercises. BAC planning, man/day calculations, operational documentation. Practical BAC planning & report writing exercise.
14. DETECTION: Intro to detection technologies and systems used for EOD operations. Mine-lab F3 and Large-loop operators training syllabus.

15. MOVEMENT OF EXPLOSIVE ORDNANCE: Movement of explosive ordnance, including Hook and line pulling equipment and pulling techniques, Bomb lifting and recovery equipment and techniques.

16. INTRO TO UNDERWATER UXO: Intro to naval weapon systems, Identification features of sea mines, torpedos, limpet mines and depth charges, fusing types and methods of operation. Reconnaissance procedures and disposal options.

17. EOD SEARCH OPERATIONS: Introduction to search principles and procedures, search task planning. Building and vehicle search procedures. Search equipment and use of explosive detection dogs. Practical search training exercises.

18. EOD PROJECT MANAGEMENT: EOD SOP reviewing and writing. Technical input for project proposals. Compiling technical training programmes, Intro to EOD project work-plans and progress reporting.

19. SMALL ARMS & LIGHT WEAPONS: Introduction to SALW, Weapon and Munition Id, SALW Destruction Methods, Demonstration of the Ward method of DDR process.

 


Target Audience:                                                  

This course is designed for individuals seeking higher IMAS Level 4 EOD qualifications for employment in the mine action industry or those who wish to further enhance their knowledge and skills base from either ex military qualified personnel or those from International Non Government Organisations and Commercial Companies to IMAS, up to IMAS Level 4 EOD.

Number of Attendees: Maximum 16.

Skills Prerequisites: Demonstrated relevant prior learning to a minimum IMAS Level 3 EOD qualification, required to be IT literate, fit & healthy & fluent in spoken & literate in the written English language.

Method: The course will cover both classroom theory & live practical training incorporating realistic task assessments and mine action IMAS Level 4 EOD training exercises.

Duration: 6 weeks
